How to Build a Silicon Based Solar Panel Recycling Plant for Glass, Silicon and Silver Recovery

Start With The Right Recycling Target

A silicon based solar panel recycling plant should not be designed as only a crushing line. For industrial buyers, the real goal is to separate end-of-life crystalline silicon PV modules into valuable product streams: aluminum frame, glass, silicon powder or silicon pieces, copper ribbon, and silver-containing materials. Therefore, the plant layout should follow the value chain of the module, not only the size reduction process.

Pre-Treatment: Remove Frame And Junction Box First

The first section of the solar panel recycling plant normally includes feeding, aluminum frame removal, junction box removal and panel preparation. This step improves the purity of later materials and reduces wear on the crushing and separation equipment.

For single glass solar panels, a mechanical recycling line can remove the frame and glass first, then crush the panel to smaller sizes. In Yushunxin’s YSX-1000 single glass solar panel recycling line, the process includes frame removal, glass removal, shredding to 3–4 cm, hammer crushing to 6–8 mm, grinding to 10–80 mesh, gravity separation and electrostatic separation. The model is designed for 1 t/h capacity, with 277.6 kW total power and a 36×6×6 m land requirement.

EVA Delamination: Choose Mechanical Or Pyrolysis Route

The key difficulty in silicon solar panel recycling is EVA separation. EVA bonds glass, silicon cells and metal ribbons together. If the EVA is not removed properly, glass purity, silicon recovery and silver enrichment will all be affected.

For mixed single and double glass solar panels, a pyrolysis production line is often more suitable. Yushunxin’s mixed solar panel pyrolysis line includes YSX-8000 and YSX-16000 models, with 8 t/d and 16 t/d processing capacity. After aluminum frame removal, the panels enter the pyrolysis reactor. EVA glue evaporates during heating, while glass, silicon, copper and silver-containing solids go to the screening and separation system. The generated syngas can return to heat the reactor and help reduce running cost.

Separation System For Glass, Silicon And Metal Recovery

After delamination, the plant needs cooling, screening, air separation, gravity separation and electrostatic separation. Glass should be removed as early as possible to protect downstream equipment. Silicon and plastic powder can then be separated by electrostatic equipment, while copper and silver-rich fractions can be further concentrated.

Silver Extraction And Refining Module

If the project focuses on higher product value, a silver extraction section can be added after material enrichment. The rough silver process may include dissolving kettles, filter presses, diaphragm pumps and silver immersion or replacement kettles. A refining section can then use silver electrolysis equipment to produce high-purity silver.

Wastewater and waste gas treatment must be included in this section. The silver extraction process can use wastewater neutralization, activated carbon adsorption and related chemical treatment systems to support safer operation.

Environmental Control And Project Support

A complete silicon based solar panel recycling plant also needs dust collection, exhaust gas treatment, electrical control, safety protection and maintenance planning. For overseas projects, certification is also important. Yushunxin’s CE-related document covers solar panel recycling plant and other e-waste recycling machine models, including YSX-M-1t/h and YSX-P series models.

In practice, a successful plant should match raw material type, daily capacity, recovery target, land area, labor condition and local environmental rules. With a suitable process design, investors can build a practical recycling line for glass recovery, silicon separation and silver extraction.
